Camp Pakanbaroe was the beginning point for the building of the railway line approximately 220 kilometres long, between Pakanbaroe and Moeara, which was finished on August 15th 1945. In total, there were 14 camps along the railway line from which work was done. In the Pakanbaroe camp, materials were unloaded and a shunting station was built. Until July 1st 1945 there was also a technical service housed there.

On August 23rd 1945, the prisoners of war in the Pakanbaroe base camp were sent from their work back to the camp prematurely. The next day they were told that Japan had surrendered. The Japanese burned all of the camp’s administration. The camp was cleared on October 17th 1945, and all of the prisoners of war were moved to Camp 2 near Soengeitengkirang.
