The river Bodjo was approximately 8 kilometres to the south of Parepare, about 120 kilometres north of Makassar, in the southwest of Celebes (Sulawesi).

One section of the infantry camp at Parepare was used as a collection camp for the internment of civilian men and boys from Celebes (except Menado) and the eastern parts of the Dutch East Indies from the end of September 1942 until the end of October 1944. On 22 October, after two bombardments by US aircraft, the internees were transferred to an emergency camp on the river Bodjo, about 8 kilometres south of Parepare. There, the men and boys were housed in the stalls of a disused swine middens, initially without any further provision for their stay there. Between the beginning of May and the beginning of June, the survivors were transferred as a group to camp Bolong. 25 of the prisoners died from a dysentery epidemic.
