Military Encampment in Hollandia

Information: In February 1944, a group of approximately 200 mainly Dutch missionaries and nuns interned in the mission post at the Alexis harbour and Kariru on the north coast of Australian New Guinea were taken by boat to Hollandia. Half of them died during an Allied aerial bombardment of the transport. The approximately 100 survivors were taken from the military encampment in Hollandia to the police encampment in Joka, where at the beginning of May 1944 they were freed.
