Joka is approximately 13 kilometres inland of Hollandia (now Jayapura), on the north coast of Nieuw-Guinea.
Internees: men, women, and children Number of internees: 100 (approximately) Information: The small number of administrative officials who were still at Hollandia at the time of the occupation on 13 April, 1942, were interned with their families in the barracks of the Field Police in Joka. After several days they were taken to Manokwari, and from there to Ambon. In 1944 the barracks served as an internment point for a group of approximately 100 primarily German missionaries and nuns, who had been brought in February from Australian New Guinea to Hollandia. On May 2nd 1944 they were freed, several days after the Allied landing at Hollandia.
