Information: From April 1942, British, British-Indies, and Australian prisoners of war were held in a section of the Uniekampong, an encampment of residential barracks for harbour coolies working for KPM, Rotterdamsche Lloyd, and the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (Netherlands Steam Travel Company) in Tandjoeng Priok. The prisoners of war were put to work restoring the harbour and the Kemajoran airfield. In October, the camp was enlarged by the addition of the bordering Kampong Kodja district, and Dutch prisoners of war were brought in. Around this time the transports of prisoners of war from Batavia to overseas labour camps began. Parts of the camp were used as “buffer camps” to hold large groups of prisoners of war waiting to be loaded aboard ship. In November 1943 the prisoner of war camp was abandoned. It is likely that parts of it were used in July 1945 as shelter for prisoners of war who were put to work at the General Motors assembly plant across the street.
