Information: Probably already in April 1942 a camp of bamboo and atap was set up near Kampong Makassar, to house Australian prisoners of war from Tasikmalaja. The camp was encircled with gedek and barbed wire. From January 1943 the camp was also used as a transit camp for prisoners of war. They came primarily from east Java and were awaiting further transport by ship from the Tandjoeng Priok harbour. In January 1945 the remaining prisoners of war in the camp were sent to Singapore and to the 10th Battalion in Batavia. After that women and children from Batavia, Buitenzorg and Bandoeng were housed in the camp.

Information: In January 1945 the prisoners of war from the barracks camp near Kampong Makassar were sent in separate groups to Singapore and to the 10th Battalion in Batavia. After that women and children from Batavia, Buitenzorg and Bandoeng were housed in the camp. They were put to work in nearby vegetable gardens, serving the Batavia camps, and a piggery, serving the Japanese.

Information: At the time of the Japanese capitulation the barracks camp near Kampong Makassar held approximately 3,500 women and children. Immediately after the capitulation more food was provided, and in September there were food drops. Fresh bread was baked for their own use and for the camp houses in the city. The heavy chore shifts in the vegetable gardens were taken over by boys and men who came to the camp in search of family. Messages from family arrived via post and radio. At the end of October the camp was cleared and the residents went to the Ursuline Cloister in Bandoeng. Later the camp, after improvements were made, served as a transit camp for Dutch military personnel.
