Soerabaja is on East Java, opposite the island of Madoera. The Jaarmarkt terrain was in the Ketabang district of the city and had its main entrance on Cannalaan in the city center.

The Soerabaian Jaarmarkt Society complex was built in 1923, and during 1942 became one of the largest gathering camps for prisoners of war in eastern Java. The prisoners of war were housed in wooden pavilions or barracks, encircled by barbed wire and gedek. From October 1942, the camp was cleared step by step. Initially the prisoners of war were taken to Batavia and Tjimahi. From April 1943 they were also taken to the labour camps on the Moluccas Islands and on Flores. At the end of the month the camp was fully cleared.
