Tjideng in Batavia

Town: Batavia
District: West Java
Region: Java
Location: Batavia (now Jakarta) is on the north coast of West Java. The “European” Tjideng district was west of the city center.
From August 1942 to 29 August 1945 this location served as a civilian camp >>
Other name: Bunsho I Kamp 1
Internees: old men, women and children
Number of internees: 11.337
Number of deceased: 434
Information: From August 1942, Tjideng functioned as a “protected district” for “European” women and children from Batavia. Later the district became a collection point camp for internees from throughout Java, although the camp was also gradually made smaller. In the last months of the war, there were more than 10,000 women and children crowded densely into approximately 220 houses and other buildings. From April 1944 to April Captain Sone (Sonei, Sonai) was the camp’s general director. He was infamous for his capriciously cruel attitude.

From 29 August 1945 to June 1946 this location served as a relief camp >>
Internees: women and children
Number of internees: 10.000
Information: After the Japanese capitulation the situation in all areas of the Tjideng district improved. The bowing before the emperor, the roll calls, and the chore details were abandoned. The heihos who guarded the camp were replaced by Japanese soldiers, outside the gate. The food was better because fruit, sugar, bread, and rice entered the camp. The gedek was dilapidated, so bartering was possible. Food came from a central soup kitchen until kerosene stoves were distributed and people could cook for themselves. On August 17th, the first cases with medicines arrived at the camp, from Japanese supplies, and also new doctors came. With help of the engineers, the sewers in the camp, which had been in a terrible state, were repaired. The seriously ill were evacuated, increasing living space for the rest. The departure of women and children who, despite the threatening conditions outside the camp, decided to go also made more room, as did the enlargement of the camp through the absorption of several surrounding streets and the transfer of many women and children to other locations in the city. Many women and girls sought office work to earn money and to have something to do, in expectation of evacuation. Due to a shortage of paper and books, education was not possible until the end of 1945. Those who went to work or visit outside the camp were transported in buses or trucks under armed British guard.
