From the end of May 1942, civil servants, doctors, and workers who needed to keep working were interned in the school building and several outbuildings on the grounds of the Saint Joseph cloister. If the men lost their work they were transferred to the Unie Kampong, and later also to Soengeisengkol and possibly Belawan Estate. From March 1943, the men who were still working were interned with their families on the grounds at Saint Joseph’s. Camp leadership was in the hands of Mr. C.E.E. Kuntze, mayor of Medan, and Mr. A.A. Hoefnagels. In October 1944, the last men were taken to Si Rengorengo, and most of the women and children were taken to Gloegoer. After that the Saint Joseph School held seriously ill people from the camps near Medan. There was a Kempeitai post in the church for a while.
