On 9 February 1942, the "European" men and boys from Makassar and surroundings - later also from the Lesser Soenda Islands - were assembled at the police encampment in Makassar. They were gathered into a number of small barracks on one side of the central square. The women and children were put into large barracks on the other side of the square. Between the barracks was a covered bicycle rack. The seriously ill were taken to the Op ten Noort, a KPM ship which had been outfitted as a hospital ship in 1941 and which had been directed by the Japanese to Makassar after the battle in the Java Sea. At the end of August 1942, all of the women and children were taken from the police encampment to Malino, and a month later the men were taken to Parepare.
