The higher-placed civil servants, police functionaries, and other “prominent people” in Buitenzorg were interned in March 1942 in the Pledang prison. It’s possible that there were also city guard members interned there for a short time. A number of the internees were taken to the Struiswijk prison in Batavia, the rest to the Ursuline Cloister or Camp Kedoengbadak. From December 1942 the prison housed political prisoners, in relation to the prosecutions against the Welter resistance group. On March 26th 1943, the leaders of the resistance group were taken to Batavia, where those condemned to death were executed.

In October 1945, men and older boys from Buitenzorg and Depok were detained and locked up in the Pledang prison by republicans. The circumstances there were bad. The men and boys from Buitenzorg were interned 60 to a cell, in cells intended to hold 16. The group from Depok had to stay in the courtyard exposed to the elements. There was very little to eat or drink. The Indonesians were very aggressive and tortured their prisoners with knives, spears, and rifle butts. After approximately a week the men and boys were freed by Gurkhas. They were taken to the 14th Battalion or, to be reunited with wives and children from Depok, to Kota Paris.
