The Chinese school in Glodok district functioned as a labour camp for prisoners of war and about 40 civilians. The prisoners of war were British, Australians, British-Indies people from Serawak and Malakka, and Dutch, Moluccan, Menadonese and Timorese KNIL military personnel. The civilians were native passengers from a torpedoed ship from French Indo-Chine. The prisoners were put to work mainly in Batavia itself, doing cleaning and working on the roads. At the end of September 1942, the approximately 1,200 prisoners were taken to Glodok prison, and later in October new groups of prisoners of war were interned at the school. In January 1943 the camp was cleared and the residents taken to Singapore.
