Soerabaja is on east Java, opposite the island of Madoera. The Government HBS was on H.B.S. Street in the city center.
Internees: prisoners of war Number of internees: 2.625 Information: From March 1942 to February 1943, the buildings of the Government Civilian School for Higher Education (HBS) formed a collection-and-transition camp for prisoners of war from central and eastern Java. From September these were almost entirely British, American, and Australian. At the beginning of January they were taken to the nearby Jaarmarkt camp. Commendant: lt.
