Because of plundering by the native population, those “European” civilians still in Pematangsiantar already on 13 March 1942 sought refuge in the hospital of the Siantar Doctor Fund (SDF). After the prison in Pematangsiantar was designated a men’s camp on 11 April 1942, all of the men from in and around Pematangsiantar and from Tapanoeli and Kabandjahe were taken there. The circumstances, particularly with regard to food, were bad and the death rate was high. For a short time, repair work needed to be done at the local airfield. In April 1943 the internees were taken to Soengeisengkol; 15 British internees went to Bindjei.
