On March 12th 1942, the KNIL troops had cleared the city of Koetaradja. Approximately 52 “European” civilians (about 40 men and 12 women) who remained were collected by the Japanese and put in the prison and several homes. Approximately 60 Moluccan and Menadonese military personnel, nurses and cooks from the military hospital, several patients, and a guard division were also interned at the prison. From this group, 56 were taken on 15 March 1942 and forced to march through the city to a fishing boat. They were put aboard and shot dead at sea as a reprisal for damage done to the Koetaradja airfield. The rest of the group were freed. Afterward men and women were taken several times from the civilian camps in Atjeh to the Koetaradja prison. The last survivors were released from the prison at the end of January 1944.
