Semarang is situated on the north coast of Central Java. The school boarding house and girls' orphanage of the Franciscan Sisters of Heythuysen was at the corner of Klooseterstraat and Herenstraat, in the north of the city (Benedenstad).

From October 1943, the south wing of the cloister complex of the Franciscan Sisters of Heythuysen served as an assembly camp for women and children. They were accommodated in the school’s boarding house and in the girls’ orphanage, walled and secluded from the north wing of the complex. In the camp there were also a small number of men who had been made to work under the Japanese or who worked still, and a small number of elderly men. The internees came in the main from Soerabaja. In the second half of 1944, the men and boys were transferred to Bangkong. In May 1945 the women and children were moved to the neighborhood camps Halmaheira and Lampersari, elsewhere in Semarang.
