The “European” Darmo district and part of the Koepang district functioned from June 1942 as an internment camp for women and children. They were housed in large and smaller houses in the district, and the district was surrounded with barbed wire and gedek. The camp’s gate was on Reiniersz Boulevard, at the crossing point with Coen Boulevard. A small area of the district, on the streets Patrasstraat and Camphuyslaan, was set up as a hospital camp. Many of the internees were the wives and children of fallen or evacuated naval personnel. In the period September 1943 to April 1944 the women and children were taken to camps in Moentilan, Semarang and Tangerang.

A small area of the district, on the streets Patrasstraat and Camphuyslaan, was set up as a hospital camp. From May 1945, several dozen Indo-European civilians were interned there.

From September until the beginning of November 1945, the Darmo district was a relief camp for women and children from Soerabaja and surroundings and for women and children who had been previously interned in Japanese camps in in Semarang, Ambarawa and Banjoebiroe. One of the transports to the camp was attacked and 83 women and children were killed. The food in the district came from a soup kitchen and the kitchen at the Brantas hotel. In the first week of November groups of women and children were taken by truck under Indonesian guard to the Tandjoeng Perak harbour. From there they were evacuated to Singapore. On November 6th the district became a republican camp. At that time it held approximately 4,000 women and children.

The food in the district came from a soup kitchen and the kitchen at the Brantas hotel. On November 6th the district became a republican camp. At that time it held approximately 4,000 women and children. They were joined by approximately 2,000 women, children, and elderly men who had been previously interned in the Simpang Club. During November groups of men, women and children were taken to camps in, mainly, Modjokerto and Djombang. On November 28th, during the attack on Soerabaja (10 to 30 November, 1945), the approximately 1,200 women and children still in the district were freed by British-Indies troops and evacuated to the harbour.
