Sanatorium Kampili/Boskamp in Malino

Town: Malino
From 22 March 1943 to 17 July 1945 this location served as a civilian camp >>
Internees: women and children
Number of internees: 1.670
Number of deceased: 37 (including 7 because of bombardment)
Information: At the beginning of 1943, the derelict sanatorium and mental hospital annex, approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Makassar, was set up as a holding camp for women and children. In March 1943, a group of women and children arrived from Ambon, in May there followed the women and children who had been interned in Malino, and in September 1943 a group from Timor arrived. They were housed in 12 barracks approximately 6 x 60 metres in area (the Malino group) and former personnel housing (the Ambon group). There were approximately 100 people to a barrack, and about 30 per house. In July 1944, 4 additional barracks were built, intended for Indo-European people ('Patrimonium'). In July 1945 the camp was bombarded twice by the Allies. During the latter of the bombardments, 7 internees were killed and a large area of the complex was destroyed. In the nearby forest a bamboo-and-atap camp was hastily built, and called the Forest Camp.

From August 1945 to 26 September 1945 this location served as a ex-Japanese camp >>
Internees: women and children
Number of internees: 1.670
Information: After the camp in and around the former sanitorium Kampili was largely destroyed in July 1945 by two American bombings, a bamboo and atap was built in the nearby forest (the Forest Camp). On August 17th the elderly and the sick returned to the sewing room and the medical clinic in the old camp, and days later the Japanese began to build barracks on the sanitorium grounds to replace those which had been destroyed. In the last weeks of August, assorted sections of the camp, including the school, returned to Kampili. The food at Kampili was good, firebombs were removed, on 31 August a Queen's Party was held, and a Japanese doctor came to assist the Dutch doctors Goedbloed and Feenstra. Circumstances in the Forest Camp were not as good: primitive sanitation facilities, no water, and food had to be brought from Kampili. At the beginning of September the first food drops began. During that month various groups left for Makassar, first the sick and people with family in Makassar, later the rest. On September 26th 1945, both camps were cleared.
