Beatrix School in Medan

Location: Medan is on the east coast of Sumatra. The Beatrix School was in the 'European' Polonia district, between Tasmanlaan, De Houtmanlaan and Bontekoelaan.

Information: Some of the evacuees from the Japanese camps in Rantauprapat arrived at the Beatrix School for registration, to be directed further to accommodations in the surrounding Polonia district. The people received food in the classrooms and stayed for a night or two on clean mattresses under mosquito nets white as a sheet. Upon the outbreak of the bersiap period on 9 October 1945, the building also served as a refuge for those living in the area. On December 6th, 1945 a big Sinterklaas party was held at the school for all the children in the Polonia camp.
