The cavalry encampment at Banjoebiroe was used from the end of December 1942 as an internment camp. At first it held mainly women and children from Central Java. From the 2nd half of 1944 Banjoebiroe 11 was an assembly camp for women and children from all of Java. The camp was walled, and encircled with barbed wire and gedek (woven grass mats).

At the time of the Japanese capitulation, the cavalry encampment at Banjoebiroe held approximately 2,400 women and children. On August 24th 1945, the Indo-European women were permitted to leave. Some days later boys from Ambarawa 7 were reunited with their mothers at Banjoebiroe 11. At the end of August, there was trading at the gedek: clothing for food. Food drops began at the beginning of September. In the second half of September, the ill were taken to the military hospital at Magelang, and at the end September four RAPWI transports left to travel via Semarang to Soerabaja. During November, Indo-European men, women, and children from the surrounding areas sought safe haven in the camp. On November 26th British troops evacuated everyone to Banjoebiroe 10 and Fort Willem I in Ambarawa.
