From August 1943 to February 1944 the prison and outbuildings at the military encampment at Banjoebiroe functioned as a way-station for men who were on their way from forced labor at the agricultural colony Kesilir (East Java) to the 15th Bat. in Bandoeng. The prison complex was encircled by barbed wire and gedek.

In February 1944, the prison and outbuildings at the military encampment at Banjoebiroe housed women, children, and elderly men from all of Java. At the beginning of August 1945, a number of the internees from Xaverius College in Moentilan in Banjoebiroe were also brought there. On August 7th the camp was expanded by the incorporation of an adjoining plot of land with a number of barracks of the KNIL encampment. The camp was encircled by barbed wire and gedek.

At the time of the Japanese capitulation, Camp Banjoebiroe 10, comprising the prison, a number of barracks, and a number of officers’ homes belonging to the military encampment, housed about 5,000 women and children. After the capitulation was announced, the Indo-European internees were permitted to leave the camp, while other women and children also left to be with family in other camps. By 24 August 1945, the gateway of the camp bustled with trade as clothing was exchanged for food. The food from the camp kitchen was bad: soup, a little rice, sometimes gruel, and no breakfast. At the beginning of October the food improved greatly. There was a massive shortage of medicine and firewood. Electricity, water, and food transport were cut off several times by the pemoedas. At the end of September, 450 women and children were evacuated by the RAPWI via Semarang to Soerabaja. The other women and children were taken to Semarang at the end of November, and by the beginning of December the evacuation was complete.

At the beginning of December 1945, Camp Banjoebiroe 10, comprising the prison, a number of barracks, and a number of officers’ homes belonging to the military encampment, was cleared by British troops and the evacuees taken to Semarang. The prison was put into use later that month as a republican camp. The cells held women and children, and also later boys, from Oengaran, Soerakarta and Salatiga. The camp was overcrowded. People slept on wooden planks. The food consisted of rice gruel with some vegetables, twice a day. The sanitary shortcomings were partially solved with provisional latrines. There was electricity and running water, but no medical care. In June 1946, all of the men, women and children were evacuated, and taken by truck to Soerakarta, from there traveling by plane to Semarang.
