Infantry Encampment in Parepare

Location: Parepare is situated approximately 130 kilometres north of Makassar, on the west coast of souther Celebes (Sulawesi).

Information: A part of the infantry encampment at Parepare functioned from the end of September 1942 until the end of October 1944 as the main assembly camp for interned civilian men and boys from Celebes (except the district of Menado) and the eastern Dutch East Indies.They were housed in barracks, surrounded by barbed wire and a high fence. On 19 and 21 October 1944 the camp was bombed by American aircraft and 13 internees died. Days after the final bombing, the internees were taken to an emergency camp at the Bodjo river, approximately 8 kilometres south of Parepare.
