Internees: prisoners of war Number of internees: 2.500 Number of deceased: 2.494 Information: In September 1943, the approximately 2,000 Australian and 500 British prisoners of war who remained in the prisoner of war camp in Sandakan were forced to begin a days-long march to Ranau. In the end only six prisoners survived, because they managed to escape Ranau during the last weeks of the Japanese occupation. The rest died or were put to death.
