Internees: prisoners of war Number of internees: 700 Information: During the Japanese occupation, a number of new airfields were built in and around Surabaya. For this, many thousands of forced laborers were put to work. For the construction of the airfield by Grissee, prisoners of war were also put to work, consisting of a group of Moluccans and a group of Menadonese KNIL military personnel. They were probably kept in two bamboo and wood barracks, approximately a kilometre southwest fop Grissee. It is likely that these prisoners of war were employed as heihos in the Japanese service and sent to Manokwari (New Guinea).
