Internees: prisoners of war Number of internees: 240 Number of deceased: 16 Information: A detachment of initially 240 British prisoners of war from the prisoner of war camp in Makassar were put to work in the nickel mines of Pomelaä from January until September 1943. A large number of romushas also worked there permanently. Conditions were exceptionally bad: the regime was hard, the atmosphere very humid, and there were many mosquitoes. Many fell ill. On September 16th 1943, the 224 survivors returned to Makassar.
