Bangkattan Hospital in Bindjei

Information: Women and children from in and around Bindjei were interned in the Bangkattan Hospital. They were housed in the European hospital, the 2nd class pavillion, and outbuildings. The camp was encircled with atap fencing. The main building, outside the camp, served as the general hospital for those interned in Bindjei. On May 9th 1942 the families of Dr. J. Potter van Loon and hospital assistant J.C. van der Kaaij – two women and three children – were transferred to a house that belonged to the hospital. Van der Kaaij was interned in the Tanah Merah men’s camp in the Central Hospital in Bindjei and remained camp leader there until May 26th, but was interned with his family on May 9th. On May 6th 1943, the camp was cleared and 100 women and children were taken to Camp Poelaubrajan E.
