Other name: Kendari I Internees: prisoners of war Information: On 24 January 1942, the just-completed military airfield Kendari fell into Japanese hands nearly undamaged as result of a surprise attack by the Japanese navy. The airfield was put to use for Japanese fighter planes and bombers. Some of the members of the small KNIL garrison stationed at Kendari were interned at the prison in Kendari's military encampment. The majority of these were native military personnel, most of whom were later on released or impressed into the Japanese military. In the area of the camp, there was an execution site where "European" and native military personnel and civilians were put to death.
