How the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies began differed per region. How the occupation - including the internment of prisoners of war and civilians - subsequently developed, could also vary per region. Liberation and evacuation were also not the same everywhere, while the bersiap occurred mainly on Java and Sumatra. For this reason a separate page with background information is available for each region.

You can consult these pages at all times using the red navigation bar at the top of your screen. Furthermore, every page dedicated to a specific camp includes a link, under 'Background', to the page on the region in which the camp was located.
